God is charitable. He is solely motivated by the welfare of others:
He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life... (2 Nephi 26:24)
Charity is required both to become like the Lord and also to see him how he really is:
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen. (Moroni 7:48)
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)
If you are not charitable, you are not yet like him.
You can’t receive what he has without being like he is:
...except men shall have charity they cannot inherit that place which thou hast prepared in the mansions of thy Father. (Ether 12:34)
Unless you, too, are solely motivated by the welfare of others, you will never experience and learn what you need to become like he is.
