Some people are very concerned with being in the presence of God. In reality, this isn’t the challenge. Anyone at any level of awareness can be in the presence of God if they just obey their best understanding of God’s will. The quantity of God’s glory that you can endure is limited by the degree of awareness you are reconciled to. The goal is to obtain and reconcile to all of the awareness God can provide you. It is only by doing this that you can be a joint heir with Christ, and enjoy the presence of the Savior and the Father to the full extent. That is the reason you were born, not to merely recover the state of reconciled ignorance that existed before the fall of Adam and Eve. The disciples on the road to Emmaus were in the presence of God, but his glory was so stripped down that it was not measurably different than being in anyone else’s presence.
In heaven, you are surrounded by those who obey the same law as you do. Everything you know of is bounded by the law of your current kingdom. You don’t have to worry about any of the consequences of lower orders of law. You achieve a state of rest, because you are free from any trials that would test your trust in God.
You are free from any trials because you can’t perceive the limitations of your current level of light and truth. Recall that Adam and Eve were not granted a means to acquire a level of awareness beyond their current level of trust in God in the Garden of Eden. They had to partake of the fruit of knowledge of good and evil in order to do that.
In the garden, Adam and Eve were naked, but they were not aware of that fact until they ate the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. When we think of this event, we think of sin entering the world. This is true, but oversimplified. What actually changed? Before the fruit, they chose to disobey God. It was not impossible to disobey God before they ate the fruit. Eating the fruit did not enable disobedience to God, because it was already possible. What changed then? They were already naked, but they did not realize what nakedness was. It was neutral, unrecognized. They were unaware. After the fruit, their perception of reality increased. They could now perceive more than they did previously. Did they perceive everything all at once? No, they did not, as noted by Eve’s comment afterward about their experience being good in the end. Eating the fruit opened a gateway to perception of reality beyond whatever they perceived before.
Heaven is like the Garden of Eden in the sense that you can’t perceive the limitations of the level of awareness you possess.
