The scriptures are replete with commandments to search out new truth. There is a finite amount of knowledge that is required before an individual can conquer the sins of this world. Joseph said, “Knowledge saves a man; and in the world of spirits no man can be exalted but by knowledge.” (Joseph Smith, TPJS, p. 357.) If we have not yet come back into God’s presence, it is because we have not yet attained this saving portion of knowledge. Working out our salvation, then, consists of exposing ourselves to new ideas and correctly evaluating their truthfulness.

Evaluating candidate truth is neither easy nor fast. Mormon said, “Search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil” (Moroni 7:19). It is not a passive activity. Nor is it without casualty. New ideas can augment currently held beliefs (in the case of those that are correct), but they are equally likely to refute currently held beliefs (in the case of those that are not).
