Don’t be caught without a garment

Footnotes

Many professed Christians believe that all that is required to dwell in the kingdom of heaven is a vague idea of the existence of God.1

In order to remain in the presence of God, you require a covering to protect you from his fiery glory.2 This covering is provided by learning about and living the character of Christ.3 You receive his covering by learning more about Jesus,4 removing from yourself whatever you believe to be offensive to his character,5 and adding into your life whatever you believe he would in your place.6

Footnotes

  • 1. And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God —he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God. (2 Nephi 28:8) ↩
  • 2. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen. (Matthew 22:11-14) ↩
  • 3. Then if our hearts have been hardened, yea, if we have hardened our hearts against the word, insomuch that it has not been found in us, then will our state be awful, for then we shall be condemned. (Alma 12:13) ↩
  • 4. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:29) ↩
  • 5. And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: (Mark 9:43) ↩
  • 6. Wherefore, we shall have a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and our uncleanness, and our nakedness; and the righteous shall have a perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness, being clothed with purity, yea, even with the robe of righteousness. (2 Nephi 9:14) ↩
