Isaiah provided a prophetic description of the torment the Lord would face during his ministry when he wrote:

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6)

The shame inflicted on the Lord was not limited to physical spit in his literal face—which was the worst possible insult of his time—but, more significantly, included ignoring the inestimable gift of his demonstration of the character of the Father.1

All who learn and live the character of Christ will face similar treatment as he did at the hands of those who are not like him.2 The scriptures provide examples of the Lord’s servants being rejected and persecuted just as he was.3 The more like Jesus a person becomes, the more people will treat them like they would treat him.4 If you fail to notice his servants, you will fail to notice him. If you reject his servants, you will reject him.5

It is imperative to notice those who know Jesus better than you instead of ignoring them.6 It is essential to heed their teachings rather than rejecting them.7 It is important to support them8 instead of persecuting them.9 The Lord said that how we treat his servants is how we treat him.10

Footnotes

  • 1. And the world, because of their iniquity, shall judge him to be a thing of naught; wherefore they scourge him, and he suffereth it; and they smite him, and he suffereth it. Yea, they spit upon him, and he suffereth it, because of his loving kindness and his long-suffering towards the children of men. (1 Nephi 19:9) ↩
  • 2. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. (Matthew 5:10-12) ↩

Now when the people had said this, and withstood all his words, and reviled him, and spit upon him, and caused that he should be cast out of their city, he departed thence and took his journey towards the city which was called Aaron. (Alma 8:13) And we have entered into their houses and taught them, and we have taught them in their streets; yea, and we have taught them upon their hills; and we have also entered into their temples and their synagogues and taught them; and we have been cast out, and mocked, and spit upon, and smote upon our cheeks; and we have been stoned, and taken and bound with strong cords, and cast into prison; and through the power and wisdom of God we have been delivered again. (Alma 26:29) ...And they spit upon him, and cast him out from among them, and also all those who believed in the words which had been spoken by Alma and Amulek; and they cast them out, and sent men to cast stones at them. (Alma 14:7) ↩
  • 4. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. (John 15:20) ↩
  • 5. He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. (Luke 10:16) ↩
  • 6. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. (1 John 4:6) ↩
  • 7. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. (John 13:20) ↩

And he that doeth not these things is not my disciple; by this you may know my disciples. (D&C 84:89-91) ↩
  • 9. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:10) ↩
