So, uh Jared Eastley and Andrew Tyner, two people whose youtube videos I watch from time to time. They both uh cranked out videos on the fourth of July. Um on the topic of holiness, I thought that was interesting. So, um I'm gonna do one too and it might be on holiness or it might just be about crazy
straw hats and uh shirtless dudes painting their houses. So I am a shirtless dude and I'm painting my house and I'm actually making this video because I'm waiting for paint to dry. Um No joke. We're, we're um making progress. This takes forever and uh we're doing ourselves to save some money that we
don't really have right now. And um it adds insult to injury when your property tax goes up by a significant amount and you get the notice while you're doing this because it takes forever. It's really hard. The fun thing about kids paint, helping with uh the painting process. That's another reason we're
doing, it's not all about the money trying to teach my kids how to do stuff. Um So it takes a little more time but they end up with a skill um, the funny thing about, uh, having your kids help you with painting is they might or might not actually get it on the walls where you want them to and how you
want them to. One thing you can bet on for sure is that they will get it everywhere. You don't want them to get it, including everywhere they walk, everything they touch, you'll find paint in places you didn't know existed in your house and you will only find it after it's too late to get it off. Anyway
, this hat, as you can probably tell it's got some, uh, some wear on it, some holes, places where the dogs got to it or just, just sort of wear and tear. It's, uh, been around the block. It's actually, it's been out of the country. I love this hat. I have a very large head and it's hard for me to find
hats. This is all relevant. By the way, this is, uh, we're gonna talk about some parables that Jesus shared. So I know through trying on hats that hats don't really fit me very well and it's rare that I find a one size fits all that actually fits my head. So, um, also I don't like paying more money than
, uh, than is necessary for things. Um, so yesterday, imagine my surprise when I was in the farm store walking around with my daughter and, uh, we were taking advantage of this enormous fourth of July sale they have every year. So they give a military discount that's substantial on the fourth of July
. So we save up all of our big farm purchases that can wait for that day. So I bought um, a gate for my fence and some other things. But we were cruising through the store seeing if there's anything else we needed. And lo and behold, there are two floor to ceiling shelves of hats. And this excited me
because a lot of them were straw hats and uh, straw hats are really important when you work out in the sun and you're bald. So, um, I was like, well, probably none of these fit me. But let me see. And sure enough, I found one that fit and I also found that it was only 12 bucks and with the 15% off discount
, that was uh an excellent price. So, um, I didn't buy one. I bought four, bought four and I have one right here. It's a, it's a very nice looking hat, isn't it? So, thank you, whatever Chinese person made this. So what, um, so I'm getting eaten by bugs. Sorry. So, um, you might look at this hat and
say, well, this is still functional cancer just patched the holes. Right. Well, first off, if you're thinking that you've never tried to make a straw hat, um, that's a lot of work. It's a lot of work and it's really hard to make one that, that actually fits, that stays together and that doesn't, uh,
make your head itch. So, um, no, not really. But another problem with trying to patch holes in something like this is that your patchwork is probably gonna tear apart the stuff that's already there. Now, Jesus taught this parable about patching a garment and it's interesting because you can learn different
things from reading the different versions of the parable. Uh, so in one of them, he talks about a, a garment that hasn't been fooled yet. That's not fool but full. And like the fuller's field, that kind of fooling and fling was a process. And um it was basically, it was a process of getting the thing
ready to wear. Let's just go with that because we can skip over details. And in this process, what happens is that the, the garment shrinks and when it shrinks it, the patch, it would rip out the part of the garment that it's sewn into man. Um It's not fun. So, um how does that have anything to do with
anything? Well, in life, it turns out one of the applications of this is our, our tendency as humans, we have this tendency that when we learn new things naturally, we understand them in the context of what we already understand. And so we, we, for example, if we hear a new word, we'll try to define
it in terms of words, we already know. It's like this and it's different to that. Right. And it's really, really hard to reach any kind of novelty, true novelty in how we think about things. Um, so it turns out that even people who are spiritually inclined suffer from this weakness and, um, what happens
is when they hear new things, it's really hard to get them off of their old paradigm. They try to pull it in. Now, here's why that's a problem. Um When we talk about the mountain of the Lord, which is a path towards him, you're going up, right? All good stuff comes from above all good things are found
above where we are. But the problem is that from where we're standing, what we try to do is we pull stuff down and that's the same idea as putting a, a new garment or a new patch into an old garment. And what the problem is is as Jesus said, he said, when the trials come, the patch is gonna shrink because
that's what patches do and it'll rip out everything that came with it and it's better to just get a new garment. So new garments are hard to come by. But if you have to do one or the other, um the problem comes when you try to hold both. So another strategy is uh another strategy is that when the challenges
come, go with the new truth, go with the new truth and let go of the stuff that came before because it's from below. It's, uh, it's like an army of flies attacking me. It's crazy. Um, because you're trying to go higher, right? So the stuff that's higher, it's closer to the Lord. And this is a really
, really, really important concept. Um, but we'll leave it at that. There's much more you could say about it. One could say about it. Um, the other parable I was gonna talk about, I don't remember. So we'll leave it at that. My pain's probably dry now. So I'm gonna go get back to work.
